Free Agency Live: Wednesday's Round 1 Action

As more FA threads continue to close, let's look at a quick update on the decidedly Detroit-centric action.

  • The Tigers seemed to be a sure lock to sign LF Carl Crawford yesterday, but the White Sox swooped in at the last second and are now the most likely destination.  Chicago is offering a four year deal worth $84M, with a player option for 2015.
  • Once they were forced out of the Crawford sweepstakes, Detroit moved onto 3B Alex Rodriguez.  The Dodgers provided some competition, but it seems like a good bet that A-Rod is headed to the Tigers.  Detroit seems insistent on keeping the deal strictly to two years, with no option for a third.  Their latest offer would give Rodriguez a salary of $21.6M.
  • A-Rod Afternoon Update: The Dodgers are once again the leaders for A-Rod, offering a competitive salary with a third year player option.  It looks like Detroit has decided to move onto 1B Paul Konerko.
  • Detroit was also involved last night in a bidding war over 3B/OF Jose Bautista.  Despite persistent competition from the Rockies, the Tigers currently lead the bidding for Bautista with a three year deal worth about $31M.  They are apparently offering a player option for 2014.
  • The Cubs made a run at SP Ted Lilly this morning, but the Orioles, yesterday's leader for Lilly, quickly beat the offer.  Baltimore's enthusiasm leads me to believe Lilly will be headed there, but there's still plenty of time on the clock for another team to jump in.  The Orioles have already signed P Bruce Chen and RP Heath Bell this offseason.
  • Barring any unforeseen bids, the Rockies' offer to Brandon Inge will likely be good enough to sign the 34-year old 3B.  He'll get $4.5M over the next two years, with a player option for 2013.  Team officials aren't particularly happy with the signing, calling it the "first FA signing they regret".
