Free Agency Live: Wrapping Up Round 1

With just a few Round 1 free agents still on the market, and no bidding activity to speak of, now seems to be as good a time as any to wrap up and recap late Round 1 action.

  • Sure enough, the Dodgers run at 3B Alex Rodriguez yesterday was enough to get a deal done.  He'll get a two year deal at just over $17M annually, with a player option for 2013.  A-Rod joins an increasingly frightening Los Angeles lineup that also includes OF Matt Holliday and OF Ryan Braun.
  • SP Tim Hudson is about to sign with the Rockies for a two year contract that will pay him $7.35M annually, with a player option for 2013.  The Rockies needed Hudson to retool a thin rotation, the only other current members of which are CJ Wilson and Derek Lowe.
  • SP Ted Lilly seems to be headed to Chicago, as the Cubs have an unrivaled two year offer on the table worth $7M annually, with a player option for 2013.  The Orioles were involved in the bidding as late as yesterday afternoon, but it doesn't appear that they'll match the Cubs' offer.
  • Following a lengthy bidding war, the sweepstakes for SP Chris Young appears to be over.  The Athletics are preparing to sign the right-hander to a two year deal worth $3.7M annually, with a team option for 2013.  The A's were fighting off the Royals in the aforementioned bidding war, but Royals team officials said last night that they were bowing out of the race.
  • Bidding for 1B Paul Konerko continued into this morning, but the Tigers look poised to come out on top.  There was some competition from the Rockies, but following Detroit's three year offer (worth $11.6M annually), Colorado's GM said on Twitter that the Tigers "can have Konerko now" and that it was "too dangerous to bid him up and be stuck winning him".  Konerko would join recent Tiger signees Jose Bautista and Matt Thornton.
